This is a great talking point. We get to wistfully wonder, “What if?” But let’s be real, Broncos Country. There’s no way that would have ever worked. First of all, Brees left the game well cooked at quarterback. He got every possible iota of play out of his body before retiring. He was also still technically a Saint. Finally, would you really trust a guy who has sat out of football for the better part of 5 years over your backup who’s been drilling and prepping with the team all year long? Sure, the Sean Payton system is still very similar to what they ran in New Orleans. You can not tell me that there’s not a lot of nuance that has been moved about in the years since Brees was last playing the game. While it may be a fun talking point, it seems rather far-fetched…especially when we hear after the fact that Brees tested his arm and had problems with his wrist.
